Charity AFF Courses

Accelerated Freefall is the ultimate in charity challenges - it takes a real thrill seeker, or wannabe skydiver, to opt for a charity AFF course.

The name is pretty explanatory: “Accelerated” and “Freefall” referencing that progressing to a skydiving license can be much faster, and involves a lot more freefall, than Static Line Parachuting. AFF is the most modern, and intensive, way of qualifying as a skydiver.

Before the Jump

Much like Static Line Parachuting, AFF involves a full day of ground school before getting anywhere near the door of a plane. Aircraft exit and landing positions, maintaining a stable body arch, canopy control skills and malfunction drills are all par for the course. There's a short written test, just to make sure you've not forgotten everything so far, but nothing major to be worried about here.

The Jump

Once your instructors are happy with your ground work, you'll get ready in a jumpsuit, parachute, helmet, radio, altimeter and goggles, because it's time to jump! Your “Primary” and “Secondary” instructors will accompany you to altitude (at least 12,000 ft) and get you ready in the door. With a quick “1-2-3” you'll be out the door, hopefully into a stable arch, with your instructors at your sides, holding your arms and legs into position.

You'll probably be given hand signals to correct your body position, and then it's time for you to try “Practise Pulls” - reaching for your pilot chute or rip-cord and then getting back into a position. After you've done three touches, and when you've reached the 6,000 ft mark, it's time to deploy your canopy and fly back to the drop zone. You'll be guided down with instructions from the ground via your radio, to a triumphant return to earth!

An intensive, thrilling and rewarding course: a perfect charity challenge.
