The Great Wall of China is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and one of the best known man-made structures on Earth! It is a staggering 13,000 miles long and the popular myth, that you can see it from space, only emphasises the wall’s grandeur in people’s imaginations. The wall, or walls (as in some places there are several walls), stretches from the ocean north of Beijing, through inner Mongolia and the Gobi desert all the way to the Tibetan Plateau. Many of the parts have been built across different dynasties and our trek has been designed to capture not just the historical aspects of the wall, but also the different environments that the wall passes through. Not only that, but we have incorporated as many opportunities as possible to soak up the fascinating culture of northern China, including overnight “home-stays” in rural settings! This means that, although hiking in China may be challenging, the rewards are spectacular, and the memory of a trip to the Great Wall will stay with you forever.
As well as the Great Wall tour, our challenge itinerary also includes a day in Beijing, the Chinese capital city. The trip takes in the city’s wide range of historic buildings, from ancient dynastic pagodas through to the recently constructed Olympic Stadium. You’ll also get to visit the local neighbourhoods of old Beijing, otherwise known as Hutongs, which gives you an idea of what daily life is like for the residents of this bustling city.
