Route: The Athens marathon was introduced to commemorate the Greek Soldier, Pheidippides, who ran from Marathon to Athens to bring news of victory over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon in 490 AD. To this day the course follows this original route from the ancient city of Marathon to the Olympic Stadium in the heart of Athens. Starting in Marathon the first 12 km of the course is flat with sights such as the Marathon Tomb. The middle section of the course consists of long and slow climbing hills. With the sight of the Acropolis in view the last 11km is downhill towards the finish line in the Panathinaikon Olympic Stadium.
