AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL UK

We are a human rights charity that has been working for 60-years to protect freedom, justice and truth across the world. We campaign on a wide range of issues including: women’s rights, LGBTI+ rights, the rights of refugees/migrants, freedom of speech and much more. Our work has the power to free people from prison, commute death sentences and change laws that ruin lives. By fundraising for Amnesty International UK you’ll be a part of a global movement of human rights defenders.

What do we do?

This year one of the areas we’re focusing on is climate change and its impact on human rights. The world is currently facing a climate emergency which is threatening our future. The effects of climate change are a concern for everyone but those marginalised by poverty and discrimination are affected most. The right to life, health, food, water, housing and livelihoods are in jeopardy. We are working with activists in the UK and with indigenous activists across the world who are on the frontline of climate activism. Read more about this work.

This is just one of the many areas we’ll be working on next year. All of this work is underpinned by independent research often carried out at great risk. You can read a full list of the campaigns we’re currently working on by going to our website.

We raised £3,280. It was tough but incredible. We’d recommend it to anyone.

What your donations will do

At Amnesty International UK we are funded by our supporters. We get the vast majority of our income from individual donations from people like you – not from government grants or donations from big businesses. This allows us to remain independent and to call out human rights abuses wherever they occur. Here are some examples of some of the costs associated with the research side of our work:

-       £3,645 could equip an Amnesty International researcher to carry out on the ground work in a warzone. Costs include: first aid kit, body armour, GPS trackers and more.

-       £1,213 could pay for a week of research activities in a refugee camp looking at the conditions faced by those held.

-       £64 could pay for a researcher to spend two-hours interviewing a prisoner on death row.

All the money you raise helps enable important human rights work that can free people from prison, overturn unjust laws and save lives.

Still don’t know what charity to support?

If you’re still unsure of which charity to choose to support, that’s not a problem! We’d recommend getting in touch with each charity that you’d like to support. They’ll be able to discuss how they’ll be able to support you on your journey, and what your money will be going towards.
